Even if you have a solar panel trickle-feeding your rechargeable batteries, you may need to charge them from time to time. As the battery only gets topped up a very small amount by the solar panel feed, over the winter period the charge may deplete more than it gets refuelled due to lack of light. So, if the blind is only moving a small distance each time you push the button, try plugging in the charger for a couple of hours to top the battery up.
We mentioned last time that we had a new roof blind in time for the sunnier season. I know we’ve had to wait a long time for it to stop raining and the nicer weather, but the installations we’ve completed already have looked and worked brilliantly. So if you are sweating under your rooflight, wearing your sunglasses indoors as it is just too bright, or being woken up by the sun rising at 4am then this is the blind for you.
To shade your patio. Obviously, we are always very British about the weather – it is our main topic of conversation and we’re never happy! So our customers in Epsom have planned well by having these beautiful Weinor Smaila motorised awnings installed on the back of their house. The modern rectangular housing and ability to butt them up next to each other, made them the perfect solution.

Zoe provides amazing upholstery services. She can bring back a much loved piece of furniture back to life with her expertise in this traditional craft.
She also specialises in the unusual drapery that we wouldn’t normally offer such as headboards, bed coronas, and box cushions. In partnership we motorise curtain tracks and poles, roman blinds, roller blinds and roof blinds to complement other soft furnishings for the perfect finishing touch.
As we came to the end of 2023, we paused and took a look back at some of the lovely projects we have enjoyed being involved in.
Roof Daylight Blind – we revisited this lovely hotel in Liphook to replace one of their large roof blinds (4.1m x 5.3m). Vital for darkening the room for conferences and other special events.
Pleated Conservatory Roof Blinds – Was this a conservatory or orangery or garden room? Never mind – the pleated blinds looked fabulous and with a solar control backing, they also made the room comfortable.
Pinoleum Conservatory Blinds – Whether you have a semi-detach or a country pile, our blinds last for years and years. These Pinoleum Conservatory Roof Blinds were 15 years old, but after a bit of maintenance, they work as well as ever.
Roof Roller Blinds – You know you are getting old when you get a call to replace blinds that were installed before the millennium! The motorised roof roller blinds in our Solar R fabric keep this room cool and shaded.
Awnings - It is our privilege to work in some amazing places. As a cricket fan, it gives me a special thrill to spot our awnings at Lord’s whether at a live match in person or on TV.
Every year we get involved in some new build projects with blinds throughout the house. Usually motorised, often in combination with an automation system like Loxone, Lutron, Control4, or Rako. This year we loved seeing all the planning come together on these projects.
Of course, in between all the more unusual projects we are installing roller blinds, skylight blinds, shutters, curtains, roman blinds and much more.
To think ahead to the warmer temperatures. We are excited about some product developments.Firstly, a new skylight blind. This uses a track like a tank down the sides, rather than springs. It offers reliability and is very competitive with all the benefits of temperature gain and shading that our existing range also offers.
Then we have a beautiful new awning model. The Smaila has a rectangular profile, and sits snugly against flat walls. With the extra cover profile it hides all the brackets and removes the gap behind the awning. It also goes just that bit larger than our entry level cassette awning – to a maximum of 5.5m wide by 3m, or you can achieve a 3.5m projection up to 5m wide.

After the summer months, bug dirt on metal and wood venetian blinds can be a problem. To clean them, our top tip are wet wipes. Hold the louvre one end and run the wipe along being careful not to snap or bend the slat. For light dusting, close the blind and use an ostrich feather duster. Unfortunately, it is not financial feasible to restring venetian blinds as the carriage and labour will add up to more than replacing them with lovely clean ones. We can also motorise venetian blinds – either just to tilt, or to tilt and lift completely. The tilt only ones are great value so I have ordered one for my study as I'm ashamed at how dirty my wood blind is.
To beat the 2024 price increases. This year hasn’t seen a repeat of the multiple mid-year increase we experienced in 2022, but with inflation staying consistently high across the world, our suppliers will definitely be putting their prices up on the 1st January. So invest now in any of those window shadings you have been considering to keep your costs down.
Somfy have launched a new version of the Tahoma app to update the older boxes. Just download the new version from your preferred app store. The customised settings from your old app will move across.
This is the time of year I really appreciate the simple automation that the hub affords me with my blinds. As the nights get darker earlier, the time the blinds shut varies without even having to think about it. And when the clocks change at the end of the month – again it is taken into consideration. If you haven’t got a Tahoma Hub but do have motorised blinds and would like to automate - £285 free P&P.
We can also retro-fit motors to most roller blinds and then control them via the hub from your phone. Just ask.

At the end of summer, you probably have a few dead bugs in your roof blinds, or the spiders are moving in. This is where a vacuum and hair dryer come in handy.
Close the blinds and hold down one side to allow you to blow or vacuum any debris from the top of the blind or from inside the honeycomb fabric. If you notice any marks on the fabric, only use a damp cloth. Then open the blind and vacuum above the shelving. Also check that any solar panels are wiped clean.
Please take care if you use a ladder to do this at height.
To order your shutters to have them installed before Christmas. Whilst shipping has got quicker, the worldwide movement of goods usually means more congestion and delays at this time of year, plus we need to factor in extreme weather.
This year our order cut off date is the 15th September. We will be squeezing in any last-minute technical surveys on the 18th-20th September, but recommend not leaving it until the last minute to avoid disappointment. Air freight will be available probably until the end of October, as will all other blinds and curtains.
As we are currently booking installations into October, now is the time to think about ordering any shading product to have a home you are proud to share with friends and family this Christmas.
Roman blinds and curtains are still incredibly popular for all types of windows and doors. We have a lovely book of fabrics which gives a decent choice, but we can also source most fabrics. This bunny fabric was printed to order for a stylish girl’s bedroom.

The sun has finally emerged from behind those interminable grey clouds and I have had my awning out to shade the decking. It is still going strong after 16 years (a great investment) but needs a little maintenance to keep it in top condition. The metal cassette is powder-coated aluminium so a simple wash with a soft brush and soapy water brings it back to sparkling. The fabric has a bit of dirt on it which can be dislodged with a soft brush. And that’s it!
If you have tried your awning and there is no response, please check the power supply is switched on. Over the winter the plug socket might have been used for something else. As the original conservatory blind company in the South-East, we have added solutions to our range so that we can help to cool and reduce glare on all types of sloping or horizontal glass. Even with solar reflective glass and vents, skylights and orangeries will allow up to 6 times more sun rays in.

Mark is an Architectural Technician who specialises in sustainable and thermally efficient buildings. He used Green Oak to create a beautiful bespoke home in which we were pleased to help shade the bedroom. With a wonderful view through the gable-end window, our blinds made sure nothing was obstructed during the day but the light was reduced for sleep.
Long-life Lithium batteries usually last 10-12 months. This often means that when the blind stops working, we forget that it is probably simply time to recharge. We have been labelling our chargers for the last few years, as most of us have many different devices. Keep an eye out for the WiSER sticker.
This March I will have been running the business for 15 years. I am proud to have made it this far, through some interesting times. I am especially pleased to have done it alongside some great people - particularly Sean. He has provided the technical and practical skills to ensure that you get a result he’d be happy to have in his own home. He has been called a perfectionist - but we don’t apologise for this! This month we’d like to introduce Bathroom + Kitchen Eleven.
As you may deduce from their name, they design, supply and install bathrooms and kitchens in the West London and Surrey area. We have installed shutters, motorised blinds and curtains to compliment many of their beautiful designs. The quality of their workmanship matches our own so it is a pleasure to work alongside them.
If you have a remote control handset, there will be a battery in it. This should last a decade at least. If the little LED light is illuminated when you push a button, then the battery is still functioning. If the light fails to glow, then the battery needs replacing.
This month we’ve been thinking about both the Climate Crisis and Energy-cost Crisis. I don’t think there is anyone who isn’t concerned about both of these issues, but I’m a big believer that everyone doing a little bit will add up to a greater whole. Here at WiSER Interiors, we are passionate about being part of that.
So many of the solutions to sustainable energy saving in your own home are either impractical or extortionately expensive. Our top tip is to carry out a heat loss audit. Imagine you are standing outside your home using a thermal camera.The windows, roof glazing and doors will be the parts that glow brightest even if they are triple glazed. We need to revert to the tricks our Grandparents used - blinds and curtains for insulation.
Our trade association www.bbsa.org.uk is currently conducting scientific research at Salford University to find out the exact insulating ability of different types of blinds. This has required a whole house to be built in a lab which can then be subjected to different weather conditions. We should have the results by Christmas, but early numbers are confirming our expectations. It is quite obvious that layering window dressings provides the most insulation - think boutique hotel with both blinds and curtains at the window.

Jake and his team recently did a great job providing external electrical supply for awnings and a pod. With lights and heaters attached to the awnings, it was important that the electricity draw would not blow the circuit.
