WiSER Child Safety

MAKE YOUR BLINDS CHILD SAFE

At WiSER Interiors, we recognise that child safety is an important issue for anyone who is furnishing their home. This has now been recognized in law too. The crux of the regulation is simple, MAKE IT SAFE, but that does mean there needs to be a little more thought applied about what solution is installed to ensure they are child safe. Regulation EN13120 means cord or chain operated blinds can only be installed with a safety breaker and/or retention bracket or cleat to reduce the risk of strangulation to children and vulnerable persons.

SAFE AND EASY OPERATION

As children grow, so does their curiosity with the world around them. Basic household items, including window coverings, can turn into potential hazards. We consider Child safety a top priority and now European legislation EN13120 sets a minimum standard for Internal Blinds Performance – this includes SAFETY. Due to the changes in the European standards, you will notice changes to the blind options available. These changes mean that the operating length of most blinds with cord or chains has been reduced to a maximum of 1m to lower the risk of injuries on young children.

SIMPLE SAFETY GUIDELINES

All products supplied by WiSER Interiors will meet the requirements of EN13120 and be installed to the requirements layout in the legislation.

Blinds present a hazard with unrestrained cords, braids, loop chains, and wires, which may be hazardous especially to young children. There are simple guidelines that should always be followed when installing blinds:

  1. Make sure all cords and chains are out of reach from small children. Where cords cannot be cut down, a tension device needs to be used to secure the cords/chain.
  2. Do not allow cords or chains to hang free.
  3. Never put a cot, bed, highchair, or playpen near a window or patio door where a child can reach the blinds cords or chain.
  4. Keep sofas, chairs, tables, shelves, or bookcases away from windows to prevent children from climbing up and reaching blind cords/chains.
  5. Finally, use inherently safe products that don't use a cord or chain.

In accordance with the regulation EN13120 cord or chain operated blinds can only be installed with a safety breaker and/or retention bracket or cleat to reduce the risk of strangulation to children and vulnerable persons. It's the customers' responsibility to use the safety devices as directed in the product instructions. This has been close to our heart and now with the new regulation, we can not install a product that has loose, unrestrained chains and/or cords without safety devices to manage them.
